Karl Overman: Birds and More

Steve is someone whose reputation preceded him for me.  My wife and I joined Glen and Mary Ann Belyea and Tex Wells in an ill fated chase of Whiskered Tern in Delaware on July 31 & August 1, 1993.  We went the one weekend the bird was not seen--it was seen before and afterwards.  Anyway, while waiting for the Whiskered Tern to show up, I ran into a Pennsylvania birder who, once I told him I was from Michigan, said that a very good birder, Steve Santner, was moving to Michigan from Pennsylvania.  Well subsequent events have proven that to be the case. Steve is good.  In Pennsylvania, Steve was often involved in Big Day efforts across that state, and he was the leader in county listing.  Now that he is in Michigan, he is the leader in county listing here as well.  On February 22, 2012 Steve and I successfully chased Black-tailed Gull in Ashtabula, Ohio.  Using birder logic, that put us within striking distance of Pennsylvania so we went east to Presque Isle State Park in Pennsylvania on the shores of Lake Erie.  Now when Steve lived in Pennsylvania, he lived in Lancaster County, the exact opposite corner of the state.  Nonetheless he still made 10 or so trips to this birding hotspot though never in February before. It had been over twenty years since he had been there so it was fun reacquainting him with the place.  Interestingly, he had done county listed for 22 years in Pennsylvania.  He has done 21 years and counting of county listing in Michigan.
