One of the highlights of my first Ecuador trip in 1974 was bumping into a pair of these spectacular birds with the late Tom Davis on the Papallacta Road in northern Ecuador when essentially everywhere we went we were breaking new ground for birders. The thrill was still there when I saw a pair of these class birds on the hike to see the Jocotoco Antpitta in southern Ecuador
