Karl Overman: Birds and More


Antpitta are typically cruelly difficult to see.  I say cruelly because they frequently have loud calls that sound like the birds are right next to you but you know your chances of seeing them are slim to none.  Unless.....  Some will show with effort to tape play back and in recent years it has been discovered that many species can be groomed to show up for regular feedings.  Tawny Antpitta is unlike most of its brethren in that it will at times show up out in the open.  At El Cajas National Park  I came across two there were out in the open, one a long ways from cover on closely cropped grass.
