Roland Wauer documents the western expansion of this species into the Big Bend area in his Field Guide to Birds of Big Bend 95 (1996), noting that in 1973 it was viewed as a “rare migrant” whereas by the mid-1980s it had become common in cottonwoods along the Rio Grande in the park and remains so to this day.
