Karl Overman: Birds and More


Roger Kuhlman, a superb butterfly expert as well as skilled birder found the bird at Petersburg State Game Area.  Lark Sparrows have not been a breeding bird in Michigan for a half century but the species breeds regularly at Oak Openings in Ohio, within 12 miles of the Michigan border.  The habitat at Petersburg State Game Area is very similar to Oak Openings but it is probably too small an area to support the species.

The species is a rare winter visitor to Florida that I finally caught up with in 2018 as shown below near Sarasota.
